INTECH JULY/AUGUST 2017 39 EXCELLENCE AWARDS Marks began a 27-year stint with Lockheed that included broad experience in systems engineer - ing, engineering management, business develop- ment, capture management, subcontract man- agement, program management, and executive management. In 2011, she moved to Siemens, serving for more than four years as the president and CEO of Siemens Government Technologies, which offers services such as retrofitting government facilities for smart energy usage, helping manage the Navy's ships, and integrating cybersecurity throughout the government's digital platform. In 2015, she over- saw the integration of Dresser-Rand into Siemens and was simultaneously appointed executive vice president of global solutions for the new division. She then was appointed executive vice president of new equipment solutions at Dresser-Rand and, in May, CEO of Dresser-Rand. She makes her workload manageable by her ap- proach to leadership, "A leader creates an environ- ment where people can succeed." Set a goal—a strategy for getting there—hire good people, clear the obstacles, and turn them loose. She likes what she does, too, "Find something that makes you happy. If you are not happy, go do something else in your career." Although instrumentation and control do not generally have the public awareness and prestige of some other disciplines, Marks has found little difficulty filling openings, whether she is looking for staff at the baccalaureate or PhD level, some - thing she attributes to the ever-increasing digita- lization of design work and products. It has been difficult filling positions for technicians with middle-level skills, so Marks has imported a suc - cessful model from Germany—apprenticeships. The company recruits at high schools, of fering tuition- and books-paid study at a local college a nd part-time employment at a Siemens com- pany while in school; a successful student can graduate with no debt and a full-time job wait- ing. The program is now active in four states, and it will be expanded to eight states next year. The key to Marks' philosophy may be a com- ment she made during an online conference sponsored by InPowerCoaching.com in 2015, "I am passionate about the need for science and technology as the foundation for our fu - ture as a society, and I try to spend my days and nights basically representing that in the best way I know how." n ABOUT THE AUTHOR Bob Felton (BobFelton@gmail.com) is a freelance writer from N.C. Harrison earned a baccalaureate degree in phys- ics and a master's degree in experimental physics from Lakehead University. He earned a PhD in ex- perimental physics from Simon Fraser University in 1998. As an undergraduate, Harrison was recog- nized as a Canada Scholar, and he earned several scholarships as a graduate student. He is a member of the American Physical Society and the Canadian Association of Physicists. He worked for n&k Technology, and then moved to Phillips Analytical. Soon afterward he cofounded and served as chief technical officer of Metrosol, developing the world's first fully automated vacu- um ultraviolet reflectometer. That company was acquired in 2010, after which Harrison cofounded VUV Analytics, where he is now the CTO. He has published 14 peer-reviewed physics papers, head- lined nine conference presentations, and is the co- owner of 36 U.S. and five foreign patents. Brian Rohrback, PhD, a previous winner of this award, sums up the significance of Harrison's technological advance, "The technology repre - sented by his series of patents is truly innovative and represents an important path forward, caus - ing us to rethink how to best perform quality as- sessments in the chemical, petrochemical, and petroleum industries. I believe the UV applica - tions, particularly in profiling refinery products, to be a significant improvement in providing quality controls in enough time where action can actually be taken by the plant operators." Putting it all together Technological accomplishments are dazzling, but choreographing the steps to take a good idea to market and turn a profit requires more than scientific and engineering know-how: it needs leadership—and this year's winner of the Excel- lence in Leadership award has shown that she has what it takes.
